Hi there! We are happy to announce the first CD review! Bird is the Worm picked la Stüa for a recommendation on February 18th, 2017:
Marco Santilli brought together his CheRoba ensemble and il Fiato delle Alpi for this performance recorded live at Musikinsel, Rheinau in Switzerland. It is filled with vivid imagery, often quite majestic, and yet also displays a keen precision, so no matter how intensely the music may reflect the stuff of daydreams, La Stüa maintains a focus that keeps the ear aware and active and engaged.
Opening track “Sächsilüüte” gets right to it. The strong folk element meshes perfectly with the chamber music expressionism, and together they create a home where furious jazz-influenced solos can thrive and take the music on intriguing detours and side-trips. And on a track like “Giorni di Giornico,” those three elements work in tandem to provide alternate shaping to a melody through the transformation of the tempo likes scenes in a movie.
“Sette” shows how Santilli is able to be wildly expressive on bass clarinet as he is succinct and to the point. The deep resonance of that instrument, and the addition of musicians who specialize in the lower registers adds darker tonal qualities to music that is apt to shine as bright as the noontime sun. This leads to all kinds of rich textures, as does the use of 12-string and classical guitars.

| „La Stüa“ heisst das vielversprechende Projekt, das jazzige, klassische und volksmusikalische Elemente mit Improvisation vereint. Das Werk entstand als Kompositionsauftrag von Pro Helvetia für das Festival Alpen-töne 2015 und wurde dort uraufgeführt.
Interpretiert wird La Stüa vom Jazz-Quartett CheRoba und dem Quintett il Fiato delle Alpi. Liedhafte Themen weben eine Geschichte, in denen sowohl kammermusikalische Timbres wie jazzige Big-Band-Reminiszenzen oder auch rockigere Inputs zum Ausdruck kommen. Diese Klang-Geschichten schillern in lebhaften Farben und lassen neben orchestralen auch sanfte populärmusikalische Einflüsse durchscheinen. Viele Themen tauchen in der Komposition auf: „La battaglia dei sassi grossi“, „Morbus helveticus“, die Bedeutungen der Zahl „Sette“, mit dem Hinweis auf die sieben Kirchen von Giornico, der „Tangu da Wassen“, die „Strada alticcia“auf der die verschwitzte Reisegruppe bei einer Flasche Grappa Erquickung sucht und viele Anspielungen mehr. Die Behaglichkeit der Stube ist inspiriert durch ein Gedicht in Tessiner Mundart des Dichters Giuseppe Arrigoni. |
Da war dieses – Auge.
Wenn ich, die Klarinette zum Üben angesetzt, aus dem Fester sah, schaute es zurück. Von seiner Stelle am weissen Stamm einer Birke draussen. Kontrollierte es mich? Eine ständige Präsenz, die mir beim Entstehen von Musik zuschaute, wohlwollend, fragend Jetzt ist es soweit. Was da im Blick auf „l’occhio della betulla“ entstanden ist, hat seine Band gefunden: Lorenzo Frizzera, der eines Tages mit seiner 12saitigen Gitarre zur Probe kam und mich immer wieder mit seinem reichen Sound und seiner Fantasie überrascht. Ivan Tibolla aus dem Veneto, der als Organist und Akkordeonist ebenso fliessend und ideenreich ist wie am Steinway-Flügel, und der mich auf allen Ausflügen (auch den wilden Abenteuern) wie ein Bruder begleitet. Und Fulvio Maras, den ich einmal in einem Konzert hörte und dachte – das wäre mal ein Schlagzeuger, mit dem ich spielen möchte…! Wir leben weit auseinander in ziemlich verschiedenen Ecken und kommen doch für diese Musik zusammen. Wenn einer im Tessin mir eine un-glaubliche, witzige oder einfach nur überraschende Geschichte erzählt, antworte ich: „che roba!“ CheRoba lebt. Che roba! |

Musicista e cantante ticinese, Marco Santilli ha sperimentato molti generi, miscelando e giocando con timbri, parole, lingue e gusti diversi. Il suo amore più recente è un pop/rock dai sostanziosi contenuti musicali che, con autoironia e un occhio attento alla salute della musica leggera attuale, lo ha portato a sfornare titoli come “Non so cantar” e “Scantinati scandinavi”, già in rotazione sulle radio nazionali. Sono invece freschi di stampa ben tre CD: “Tempi Passati” (il tempo visto da varie prospettive), “L’occhio della betulla” (quartetto jazz registrato alla RSI) e “La stüa” (commissionatogli dal festival Internazionale Alpentöne). Clarinettista da sempre attivo anche in ambito jazzistico, Santilli ci seguirà lungo il consueto percorso di segnalazioni teatrali, musicali e cinematografiche. Con Simon Waldvogel, promettente attore del panorama teatrale svizzero/milanese qui al suo debutto registico, parleremo di Adios, da lui scritto a quattro mani con Matteo Luoni, in scena al Teatro Foce di Lugano dal 10 al 12 febbraio.
Esploreremo infine il meglio della scena musicale della Svizzera Italiana e d’oltre frontiera, non prima di aver sentito Marco Zucchi ed Enrico Magrelli per sapere cosa c’è da vedere, da vedere assolutamente o… Da lasciar perdere.
